About Avian Suites™
There are going to be times when you will need to have someone else take care of your bird. In times like these, people often look to friends and neighbors to help out. What many people don't realize is there are multiple hidden dangers with having a friend or neighbor take care of your bird.
A friend or neighbor may not notice the warning signs of a serious illness. The staff members at Avian Suites™ have many years of experience working with all different types of birds. At the first sign of trouble, your bird can be taken to the avian veterinarian of your choice for medical care and treatment.
If you have friends who also own a bird, it may seem convenient to have your bird stay with them, but placing birds of different households together can increase the risk of infectious disease. There are eleven primary avian viruses which can infect your bird. Many of these viruses are often undetectable, yet infectious, and many can result in serious illness. Since only a few of the viruses have vaccines available, the only true way to protect your bird is to keep it isolated from other birds.
Avian Suites™ is a Model Avicultural Program (MAP) certified facility. We are the first MAP facility in Minnesota, and MAP certification eligible boarding facilities are rare. MAP is a national voluntary program for the certification of aviculturalists through inspections by avian veterinarians. MAP is designed to improve the care (and breeding) of exotic birds. The certification inspection involves facilities, management practices and record keeping. Avian Suites™’ high standards of sanitation and disinfection, along with our quarantine set up (no birds from other families are put in the same room) meet and exceed the MAP guidelines. Individual records are kept on each family and each bird for future reference. Veterinary exam requirements are strictly maintained for each boarding guest. It is important to us that our clients have confidence in the care we give to our guests. We are proud to go the “extra mile” to keep your bird(s) healthy and safe while under our care.
It is dangerous for your bird to stay in its carrier and yet inconvenient for you to transport its cage. Avian Suites™ provides cages which fit each bird's individual needs from cockatiel to macaw. We request that you bring your bird's favorite toys and dishes because it helps your bird adjust more easily to its home-away-from-home.
Avian Suites™ has carefully worked with veterinarians and bird care specialists to create an environment which meets the health and safety needs of birds. Your bird will stay in a private room with only birds from your household. Room temperatures are kept slightly warmer than normal household levels to help your birds adjust to the stress of being transported away from familiar surroundings. Each room is ventilated with its own isolated system. Room air is filtered through an ultra violet sterilization unit which destroys bacteria and viruses.
Our technicians follow clinical procedures for bird handling developed by avian veterinarians. Each technician is clothed in disposable scrubs and shoe covers which are left in the room in which they are used.
By following these strict guidelines and procedures, we are able to offer not only a comfortable place to stay, but also interactive playtime in a safe environment.
